Biography
We are Louise and Trevor McLean, we are based on the Atlantic Road, Portrush literally a mile away from the Atlantic Ocean on the north coast, just outside Portrush. we call ourselves ''Atlantic Craft NI''. Both Trevor and Louise have undertaken training in Basketry and are continually striving to develop their knowledge, skills, and advance to learn more techniques and enhance their range... of work. Louise went back as an adult learner in 2001 to study Traditional Heritage Craft Skills and fell in love with all traditional crafts, her main areas are Wood carving and Basketry, and although work has up until recently focused on Willow Sculpture.... both are now developing traditional basketry techniques further. Trevor has trained at workshops in Basketry with Joe Hogan and has also completed a course in Greenwood Chair making with Alison Ospina in Cork. ........while Louise has worked with Tom O'Brien, Joe Hogan, Ann-Marie Eitchel and most recently (May 2012) Alison Fitzgerald to learn the art of making a 'Framed basket'. When on holiday 2yrs ago in Christchurch, Louise took up the opportunity to try also weaving with New Zealand flax and spent time with renowned artist Ali Brown. They worked with various schools and help deliver the 'Living History' in primary schools mesolithic projects. The creating of sculptures, most recent completed School project was a Willow Nativity scene 2010 ... this involved working with 8 schools within the borough of Coleraine Council...... Have been part of several Cross-Border initiatives, meeting of crafters and getting to see best practice in different areas and still maintain that today. -Members of the Irish Basketmakers Asociation since February 2012 - Have valid up to date CRB check for working with children and vunerable adults. A part time workshop / studio where Baskets are made, visitors may by appointment if making a special journey, call in and see us at work.....
General information
We take part in craft events, do demonstrations and can facilitate teaching of basic basketry, we are happy to discuss any requirements you may have..... as makers we feel that we are always learning and still strive to develop and advance our craft skills in our quest to enhance our knowledge.
